A strong presence in Martinique and the Antilles ...

 

Present in Martinique since 2016 and established in Quebec since 1997, this lighting design firm draws on a unique background. France Jutras and Jocelyn Bathalon, with their theatrical roots, have developed a profound sensitivity to space and atmosphere. This stage experience naturally led them to specialize in lighting design, a discipline in which they create bespoke lighting solutions for heritage sites, residences, gardens, as well as commercial and industrial buildings. Their approach is distinguished by an expressive interpretation of light, supported by precise and demanding technical expertise.

 

Over the years, their expertise in illuminating works of art has been firmly established, particularly in Quebec, where they have completed numerous lighting projects for public artworks. In Martinique, they notably illuminated some fifteen sculptures in the Habitation Clément park, as well as a monumental sculpture located in a park in the city of Saint-Joseph. These projects successfully combined technical expertise, respect for the artworks, and enhancement of the nightscape.

 

A location born from a moment of inspiration

The team's first trip to Martinique in 2012 was pivotal. Charmed by the island, its climate, its vegetation, and its light—so different from that of Canada—France Jutras and Jocelyn Bathalon decided to extend their stay. Through their networking, an architect, intrigued by their work, offered them the opportunity to develop certain sites. This opportunity perfectly matched their desire: to work in a dense, vibrant tropical environment, subject to specific regulations.

 

Technical constraints and requirements

The projects then followed one after another: private gardens and villas, the Frank A. Perret Museum in Saint-Pierre, Habitation Clément, the JM distillery, the La Salle sugar factory, public squares, and many others. Some projects presented particular challenges. For example, lighting the cellars, saturated with alcohol vapors, required compliance with ATEX regulations, which govern explosion risks. This constraint necessitated the use of specific equipment, limiting the usual range of accessories.

Beyond technical constraints, artistic intention guides every choice. The lighting effects evoke the maturation of rum in casks, reflecting a generous culture and a know-how shaped by the passage of time and its work.

 

And for what comes next…

Today, the lighting design firm continues its development with the same artistic and technical rigor that has shaped its identity. The adventure continues: several projects are underway, while others are taking shape on the drawing board. This dynamism reflects a constant desire to explore, innovate, and illuminate spaces that deserve to be revealed in all their uniqueness.
